This is the site where ministry members, friends and family can find out what’s going on at COD with our Music & Worship Ministry, and communicate with each other.
Church of the Open Door was founded in 1915 on Sixth and Hope Streets in Downtown Los Angeles, and pastored by a handful of influential Christian leaders, including R.A. Torrey, Louis Talbot and J.Vernon McGee (whose radio ministry Thru the Bible Radio still reaches millions each month with grace filled Bible study). COD moved from its downtown location to the hillside of Glendora in 1985.
Our current pastor Ed Underwood has been COD’s Senior Pastor since 1996. His passion for grace and authenticity has fueled our current congregation to seek revival in our own foothill community and beyond. COD has recently completed a new worship center on its 43 acre campus, and plans on continuing to “Build to Send” for years to come. Ed is also an accomplished writer; he compiled our popular beginning discipleship manual Beginning in Grace, wrote When God Breaks Your Heart for those going through serious trial, released Reborn to Be Wild Fall 2010 (which draws from his Jesus Movement background and calls for revival), and is now finalizing work on a third book.
COD’s Worship Pastor is Tom Townsend, who has been serving since January 1996 (he was hired 6 months before Ed arrived). Tom is a graduate of Biola University with a degree in Music Education, and has given over twenty years to serving Christ through congregational worship. His sweet wife Julie coordinates and assists the ministry in many ways, and sings alto as well.
There are currently nearly 70 people on the Worship Ministry roster who serve in various ways. There is no audition process; we try as best we can to match a willing heart for worship service with opportunities to grow. There are occasional groups made up of selected people for events throughout the year, but for the most part singers and players are on a monthly schedule according to when they can serve. We try to follow the Spirit’s leading in joining people together on any given Sunday. If you would like to join the ministry or just find out more, please contact Tom at email@example.com and we’ll connect with you.
